Treatment of Short Right Leg Syndrome in the Presence of Acute Left Sided Lumbar Injury

Where left sided lumbar injury is present, use of an adjusting heel lift under the right foot to manage leg length discrepancy typically aggravates the condition. Where it is a right sided complaint, heel lift treatment is therapeutically beneficial. It's a geometric thing. Dropping or raising one hip alters vertebral disk spacing. To elevate the right hip incrementally opens disk spacing on the left. This can exacerbate left sided disk injury.

The way forward is to clear rigidity through the pelvis and spine using focused mobility exercise, supplement with collagen to aid joint healing and where the left hip is in anterior rotation, commence rehab to normalise position. In the absence of heel lift under the short right leg, the left hip will resist being normalised but with some determined rehab effort, we can expect a partial result.

Anterior rotation of the left hip is an anatomic adjustment to shorten the longer leg (First Cardinal Sign). Reducing the amount of this adjustment will incrementally push the left hip upward, reducing vertebral disk spacing on the left, effectively pushing a left sided disk bulge back in, assisting recovery. This concept of geometric manipulation of vertebral disk spacing is used in the body building world to manage disk bulge injury. Not necessarily by hip rotation mechanics. They use a more direct exercise related approach.

Once acute symptoms have begun to resolve, mobility exercise can commence. Pelvic, sacral and lumbar flexibility enhances movement by extending range of all joints through the region, easing strain on individual problematic joints affected by injury. Make haste slowly and be gentle on yourself.

Whether pursuit of heel lift treatment to manage the structurally short right leg condition can be considered depends on the outcome of this approach and recovery at the left lumbar spine.
